A comprehensive look at Fibromyalgia pain, its symptoms, triggers, and effective strategies to manage and alleviate discomfort.

  • I am sick of fibromyalgia apologizing

I am sick of fibromyalgia apologizing

I am sick of apologizing for being me. I am sick of apologizing for being sick and not as productive or efficient or clear-headed as I once was. I am sick of apologizing for the passion that consumes me to get Fibromyalgia out of my brain and actually doing something to better our lives. I am sick of apologizing for not going to bed early enough or keeping my house clean enough or taking the time to make myself pretty every day. I am sick of apologizing for not being available at the drop of a hat whenever someone else has a day off and wants to play. I am sick of apologizing if what it takes for me to manage my illness infringes on what you want to do for the moment/hour/day. I am sick of apologizing for having to rest and take it easy after a lot of activity. I am sick of apologizing if my day gets behind me and I need to write and post my blog after the sun has gone down. I am sick of apologizing for not being able to do what others want me to do when they want me to do it. I am sick of apologizing for checking in on The Fibromyalgia Fun House after being away for a while. I am sick of apologizing for not answering the phone when I am in a really bad mood or busy or just don’t want to talk to anyone. I am sick of apologizing for taking care of myself and setting limits and boundaries that section me off from you. I am sick and tired of apologizing to you, but more importantly, I am sick of apologizing to me!

I am in a pickle. It takes money to start a business, legally protect your ideas, hire the professionals necessary to ensure you are not making colossal mistakes that could cost you a fortune or your intellectual property in the long run. Yet I can barely pay my rent, my husband is working double-time and is about ready to collapse and I had to quit my job because after 10 years, 5 of them battling CFS & Fibromyalgia, 2 strokes finally made it just too much to “power through” anymore. So how do I do this? It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there, and plenty of people are lurking around the corner waiting to steal what is not theirs. How do I get this off the ground and make the impact necessary to effect change in our lives, the life of the Fibromyalgia patient, and not sabotage my own existence? Do I just guess and do my best as I go? Pray, I don’t make poor decisions that result in huge and costly mistakes down the road? Well, I think so! It’s so easy for me to preach to all of you, my readers and Fun House friends, to relax and realize you are doing the best you can with what you are given. One thing I am sure you all have noticed by now is how gifted I am at giving advice that I do not take!

So I am going to take a deep breath and draw the line in the sand where I stand. I am going to stop apologizing for not being the girl I was in the past. Always up for a good time, easily distractible, and not terribly focused on my goals and objectives. I am going to take pride in my work and recognize that when starting a business it is not unreasonable to invest more time, energy, and resources than one have available. I am going to stay calm and clear in my mind and spirit. AND I AM GOING TO STOP APOLOGIZING! I have done nothing wrong but get sick, grow up and define my purpose. I am proud of who I am and anticipate the momentum, the results of getting The Fibromyalgia Crusade off the ground will bring that badly needed break to the pressure and confusion that consume me. And I will start to see the change it will bring to the lives of each and every Fibromyalgia patient involved as we stand together as 1 strong voice, a collective patient body that will not take the doubt, criticism, or ignorance that is serving to keep us suppressed and down any longer.

  • The Fibromyalgia life cycle

    The Fibromyalgia life cycle

Fibromyalgia has come a long way since I was diagnosed in 2006. The FDA approved Lyrica a year later and overnight it went from “being in your head” to a real condition…for some medical professionals. Not all jumped on the bandwagon because there is still no definitive test to confirm the diagnosis, but it was mildly legitimized. At least there was a sector that believed us, that we were hurting, throbbing, on fire inside, crushing ourselves as we walked, not just crazy or lazy or wimpy. Then along came Cymbalta in 2008 and we were given another win, another “option” in managing raging invisible pain. Savella came along last year and has rounded out modern medicines attempt to give us our lives back. For some these drugs have worked wonders, for others, they have caused the disaster. For many, it lies somewhere in between, but at least the word Fibromyalgia has some sort of an association with the general public. When I tell someone I have Fibromyalgia I say, “You know, the commercials for Lyrica?” and they usually nod their head with a vague sort of recognition, not at all getting it, but at least I don’t sound like a lunatic mentioning it for the first time. But Fibromyalgia awareness has a LONG way to go.

As I have connected with hundreds of fellow fibrates and we exchange stories, methods of management, frustrations, and sorrows accompanied with this disease I have become aware of a vicious pattern, what I am calling The Fibromyalgia Life Cycle… The potential Fibromyalgia has to completely destroy a person and take down their lives is astounding. Time and time again my heart bleeds as I listen to tales of broken marriages, lost jobs, degrading doctors, and denied disability claims. These patients suffer body-wracking pain while they watch their lives flush down the toilet, barely able to get out of bed and do anything about it.

Click Here to Visit the Store and find Much More….

This is the pattern of the worst-case scenario, what happens all too often to entirely too many people:

    1. A person gets sick, develops horrible pain and it does not go away.

    2. They go to the doctor who runs a bunch of tests and tells them they are just fine, nothing is wrong. If they are lucky the doctor believes them and offers them some drug or another to help with the pain.

    3. The pain, fatigue, and insomnia progress to the point that it’s all-consuming. Living life as it was before is just not possible and personal relationships begin to suffer, some are even lost as their significant others flee the insanity of a very sick person given very little help getting better. Many refuse to believe or understand the incredible pain and push it off as the patient’s fault or a mental problem. The ability to parent their children, maintain relationships and friendships, or exist as a normal person dwindles down to nothing.

      4. The capacity to do their job is compromised as more and more days of work are missed and important information “forgotten” in the file of fibrofog.

    5. The job is gone, and the health insurance goes with it. Now living on unemployment or disability (if they are lucky enough to have that) and Medicare, all the while the disease progresses and makes life damn near unlivable!

    6. SSI Disability claims are repetitively denied due to there being no firm, clinical test to “diagnose” Fibromyalgia and the full impact it has on a person’s ability to function or doctors to support the depth of destruction this disease holds over a person life.

    7. Left horribly sick with poor medical options and no income, one better hope someone is still around to offer some support and let them move in…

And there you have it, the 7 steps to hell! Now many are fortunate enough to have some support network, personal fight, success with medications or alternative treatments, or income to stop this destructive cycle in its tracks. But the point I am trying to make is that this can happen and does happen all too often. This is why I believe my strokes were the paddles to my heart to wake me up and open my eyes to how incredibly lucky I am to have survived Fibromyalgia. I am making it my personal mission to lead the charge to change the reality of living with this disease for up to 6 million of us in the USA alone. Way too many still discredit this disease and it is time for this to stop! Science is tick-tocking at a snail’s pace in figuring out what Fibromyalgia really is or how to cure it, if possible, or treat it at least. We all know it will not kill you, just make you want to kill yourself. So stay strong fellow fibrates! We are going to change the face of living with this disease.

  • I am getting my Fight Back

I am getting my Fight Back

Either that or this terrible impatience and frustration and I kinda have to admit, pure anger pouring out of me is the premonition of a flare. But I have to say all I do is look around at the wreckage that is my life and get really pissed off. The dust bunnies are having babies, getting my carpet cleaned has only made it dirtier, not that I ever vacuum. The laundry needs to be done, dishwasher emptied and re-loaded, dogs need a bath and I need blonde roots on my head and the dirt cleaned out from under my fingernails. And don’t get me started on the condition of the bottom of my feet! My bills need to be paid and taxes prepped. Let’s not even mention The Crusade, the new website, our next strategy to push our fight for awareness forward. People, in general, annoy me. I am so sick of advice! I know what I need to do, I am just not doing it. I think all it does is make the advice-giver feel good, useful, needed. I try to be nice but inside I am impatient and seething. It is all I can do to not snap or even yell. It is not my job to make you feel good about yourself! But these are just people that are trying to help me! And physically I feel great! Lilac pain, walked my doggies, did my yoga. I am trying so hard to remind myself that the aftermath of my strokes last summer could have been so much worse, but that does little to comfort me or soothe the raging monster inside.

I am so sick and tired of EVERYTHING is a struggle! I recall fondly, all reality aside, a carefree youth of playfulness and passion. Of not worrying about tomorrow or caring much about today except for finding the fun. The next thing to do. Of hanging out, no plans or destination in mind. Just being. Of keeping my front door unlocked and yelling Come into every knock, knowing it is another friend coming to play, have some fun. Now I get annoyed if someone calls and wants to spontaneously come over. They upset my order, my balance of what I thought my day would be, and just suck from me the energy I need to meet my basic obligations. I am an empty well with nothing to give, and it is beginning to infuriate me! I want to learn Spanish, look fabulous, take Salsa lessons with my husband. I want friends to play with, I want my social life back! I want to go on vacation! I don’t want every ping and pang I feel to send me into a PTSD tailspin of fear that something else is going to happen to me. Fibromyalgia is going to overtake me again. Pancreatitis is going to strike. When I get a headache I don’t just get a headache, I get a fat dose of paranoia that I am going to stroke again and I constantly live on the verge of fear that I am going to die. For there are NO guarantees in life and I have felt this first hand too many times.

So all of that being said…it is up to me to fix this. When there is a problem in life you can either change the problem or change your attitude about the problem. So many of my problems are not in my control. So the attitude needs adjusting. That is in my control. I can channel this force of frustration into productivity and start fixing these little nuisances in life that are overtaking my happiness, gratitude, grace, and generosity. I can take a deep breath and stop expecting Superwoman to come back. I just don’t think she ever will. I can be kind to myself and take joy in cleaning my home bits at a time, as my body will allow, making it beautiful for my family. I can revel in bath time with the puppies, for they will not be here forever. I can be grateful that even though it is by the skin of our teeth, the bills do get paid eventually. I can live a life of intention and purpose, not chaos as though every event has swept me out to sea. I can put my faith in front of my fear and persevere. And as my favorite lyricist Eminem says in his anthem of opportunity, Success is my only option, failure is not…feet fail me not cuz maybe the only opportunity that I got.

  • Getting sick of sick from Fibromyalgia

Getting sick of sick from Fibromyalgia

At the end of July, I had 2 strokes. Old news to most, new news to a few. I was diagnosed with a treatable and reversible form of Vasculitis, put on Prednisone, and sent home to recover. Now I will utilize modern medicine for many things but prefer to go as natural as possible as much as I can. Pancreatitis, give me the drugs. Vasculitis, bring ’em on! VICD, you bet ‘cha I will crush that virus with anti-virals. But day-to-day living and management of Fibromyalgia depend on lifestyle for me. I rely on a  moderate dose of Neurontin and habit modification; reducing stress, taking my vitamins, exercising, cutting out processed foods from my diet, etc. I always believed that steroids were BAD and to be avoided at all costs. In retrospect it is kinda funny (in that sick and ironic funny way), when I was in the ER and the doctor told me he was going to do a Spinal Tap, which would require a minimal amount of steroids, I balked at him. NO STEROIDS I said. He smirked in a sad way that said I did not have a choice. So the irony is not lost on me that the treatment for my particular stroke-causing condition is high-doses of Prednisone for months on end.

WOW, that was a wild ride! Besides being a manic and frantic freakout stresscase shaking with tremors, packing on the pounds from shoveling sugar down my throat, and growing hair all over my body, there were 2 good things that came out of that experience. “Normal” energy levels and NO Fibromyalgia pain! But here I sit, nearly 5 months later, slowly weaning down off the steroids and feeling AWFUL! Oh, I am in pain, unmotivated, sleeping 10-11 hours a night, lazy, irritable, thoroughly annoyed with everyone else’s emotional histrionics. No patience, no compassion, no sympathy; for the acute misery of life with Fibro is rushing back to me and it sucks a big fat toe! My logical side knows my body is finally getting a chance to heal and repair from the strokes now that I am not full of false drug energy. But my emotional side is having a hard time adjusting. I got used to doing 4-5 things in a day! I became conditioned to expect a certain level of productivity out of myself. I came to rely on unwavering motivation and boundless production. I was allowed to be my natural type A again with no consequences and I liked it! On my Prednisone high, I even fought with my husband over watching TV. I certainly did not have time for it, was way too busy to sit down and be bothered. Now I have to take breaks in between activities and have resumed my relationship with the television, putting her back in “best friend” status.

I will heal from this. I will go back to who I was before the strokes, just that much better for having survived yet another life-threatening crisis successfully. I will get Fibromyalgia back under my thumb. I will lose the weight I have gained, catch up on the sleep I have missed, resume the exercise I keep skipping, settle into a routine of fruition. I will move forward in my life. And it will be real, sustaining, long-term progress. Thank God there was a treatment for the strokes I suffered from, that the 8 more I was mere minutes away from having did not claim my life. Although the treatment has been brutal, it is, like most else in life, well worth it. For I am alive! I may be in pain, fog-brained, tired, sick of being sick, and totally unmotivated, but I will prevail. I will keep on keepin’ on because I have to. I have this one life to live and no matter what is thrown in my path, live it I will!

  • Fibromyalgia and celiac disease are two debilitating conditions that prove to be extremely difficult to live with

Fibromyalgia and celiac disease are two debilitating conditions that prove to be extremely difficult to live with. Some symptoms of both conditions overlap and are very similar. In this blog, we look at the connections between the two conditions and how they may be related to one another.

Fibromyalgia is a complex, long-term chronic condition with a multitude of different symptoms, including widespread pain all over the body, and without a single known cause.
Many people with fibromyalgia have digestive disorder complaints. Most commonly they are told that these are caused by Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). The symptoms of IBS include alternating diarrhea and constipation; nausea; bloating and wind; and extreme tiredness – the same symptoms of celiac disease.

Celiac disease is a serious autoimmune disorder whereby the body mistakenly attacks its own tissue seeing it as a foreign substance. When a person with celiac disease eats any food containing gluten (the protein found in wheat, rye, oats, and barley), the damage is caused in the small intestine.

Click Here to Visit the Store and find Much More….

It has been reported that gluten can lead to chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia and that some of the symptoms of the celiac disease resemble the symptoms of fibromyalgia. These include major digestive disorders; stomach ailments; chronic fatigue; headaches; widespread pain; and mental fog.

So, indications would suggest you could be presented with many of the symptoms of fibromyalgia and be suffering from celiac disease. This similarity can make gaining an accurate diagnosis difficult.

There are a few key differences between the two conditions, however. First, the celiac disease only flares up when you eat gluten. It is diagnosed by a blood test and biopsy of the small intestine during a gastroscopy. The simple treatment of it is a completely gluten-free diet.

Secondly, there is one aspect of fibromyalgia that makes it distinctive. Pain occurs in eighteen specific points around the body and gets worse when someone applies pressure to these same areas. This makes it possible to distinguish fibromyalgia from other chronic pain conditions. A doctor can tell if you have fibromyalgia by performing a diagnostic test based on these ‘tender points.

Research has revealed that some patients who have adopted a gluten-free diet have seen their symptoms of fibromyalgia and IBS disappear or dramatically improve but there is currently insufficient data to substantiate this.

If you are a fibromyalgia sufferer and are experiencing symptoms associated with celiac disease as mentioned above, it is advised that you visit your local GP to discuss in further detail.

  • Osteoarthritis is known to occur in those suffering from fibromyalgia

Osteoarthritis is known to occur in those suffering from fibromyalgia

Osteoarthritis is known to occur in those suffering with fibromyalgia, but why? Find out in this blog.

Not to be confused with osteoporosis, osteoarthritis affects the cartilage in your joints and wears them down over time, causing the bones to rub together. As a condition, osteoarthritis can make it extremely hard for you to move around, leaving you feeling uncomfortable, particularly for those of you who are looking to be active in any way. Symptoms range from mild to severe and can be affected by the weather, similarly to those of fibromyalgia. In fact, many fibromyalgia sufferers are known to also suffer from osteoarthritis. In this blog post, we discuss more the disease, its symptoms, and how it is linked to fibromyalgia.

Click Here to Visit the Store and find Much More….

The exact cause of osteoarthritis is unknown. This being said, however, in some cases, it is known to be caused by an injury that makes it difficult for your joints to heal properly. Being obese can also be a contributing factor, as it applies more strain to the joints, which adds to the pain and stress that osteoarthritis has on your body. Other diseases, such as diabetes and fibromyalgia, can also cause osteoarthritis. Of course, aging is the most common cause; as we age, our bodies wear down, which results in a loss of cartilage, leaving the joints suffering.

Osteoarthritis can occur anywhere in the body, however, the most common areas include the hips, knees, feet, hands, and back, specifically in the area around your neck and spine, which is likely to be due to the fact that these areas are used the most and, therefore, prone to injury.

People with fibromyalgia are more likely to experience osteoarthritis, as they are known to have poor posture and will overcompensate regularly in order to reduce pain, making them more likely to experience injuries. Also, by minimizing motion on a daily basis, fibromyalgia patients are more likely to suffer from stiff joints and weight gain.

If you suffer from fibromyalgia, then it may be difficult to notice that you also have osteoarthritis, as both conditions are known to cause stiffness, joint pain, and fatigue. Keeping an eye on your symptoms is a sure way to stay on top of everything. If your symptoms become worse, then you may want to talk to your doctor, so you can take care of the problem quickly.

Much like fibromyalgia, there is no cure for osteoarthritis. However, there are many things that can treat it, such as physical therapy, exercise, holistic treatments, and prescription medicines. The weight control can also help both osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia, therefore, it is important to stay on top of your daily food intake to ensure you do not suffer from dramatic weight gain or even worse, obesity. Your doctor can help to determine which treatment plan is right for you, based on the symptoms you are experiencing.

Many people believe that, once they have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis alongside fibromyalgia, they will need to cope with the problems. However, this is not the case. There are ways of preventing symptoms, so do not give up.

  • How a Fibromyalgia Diagnosis Changes Your Life Story

An illness like fibromyalgia permeates every aspect of your life – it forever alters the trajectory of your story. For this year’s Fibromyalgia Awareness Day, I wanted to reflect on how my diagnosis changed my path, both in negative and positive ways.

I have written about my story before, but here I want to talk about the impact my diagnosis had. Initially, all I could see afterward was a loss in every direction, as if a tornado had ripped through my life, reducing everything I had dreamt, all my castles in the air, to rubble. There would be no graduation from my Ph.D., no career in international development, no traveling around the world, no more outdoor adventures, no parties, no financial independence, and no buying a house, among many other no’s.

Fibromyalgia changed most of my relationships. I now depend on my husband for many daily tasks, household chores, and finances – I am a dependent and he is my caregiver. I have lost friendships, and I see the friends I still have less frequently than I would like.

Click Here to Visit the Store and find Much More….

Grieving over the losses caused by chronic illness is a different process than the usual stages of grief people experience. When I wrote a post on grief after diagnosis, I found the concept of infinite losses very helpful for illuminating this:

Most often, grief is a reaction to a single, time-limited event… Grief associated with chronic illness, however, is more complex for many individuals.  For people who are chronically ill, the losses are multiple and permanent and therefore difficult to resolve. Because these losses are unending, they’re known as infinite losses (Jackson, 2014).

But my story doesn’t end there. In the trials I’ve experienced on my illness journey, I have forged a stronger, wiser, and more patient personality. Fibromyalgia stripped me down to my most basic self and forced me to find my identity independent of career, relationships, and external activities.

The positive gains that I’ve experienced after diagnosis cannot be measured in dollars or posted as pretty pictures on social media. Instead of outward experiences, chronic illness has directed my journey inward. For the first time, I have cultivated a relationship with myself.

Mindfulness meditation was the turning point for me. As I came to know the content of my own heart and mind and began to tend to my inner self like a gardener cultivating a flower bed, I learned that growing in wisdom was a worthwhile goal to pursue. People on the outside may not appreciate my efforts, and I might not have material worth to show for it, but my inner peace is a higher reward than any external validation.

Taking in the simple pleasures of an ordinary day has enriched my life – tuning into sensory experiences like the warmth of sunshine on your skin, the aroma of coffee brewing in the morning, or the sound of bird songs. Learning to savor the little moments of closeness with people I love on a daily basis is one of the most important lessons I’ve learned.

Difficult moments happen daily, triggered by pain, difficult emotions, and frustrating appointments, among other things. I’ve come to see these like thunderstorms, that eventually pass, just like the weather. It helps me to read less into those thoughts and feelings, to stop over-analyzing or ruminating on them, and eventually to let them go.

Beginning to accept me, despite my mistakes and missteps, and feel compassion for my body, even when it lets me down, has probably made me a stronger, more patient, and compassionate person. I know I treat those around me better because of it.

Being a better person is kind of the point of living your life, after all. I’m not trying to say that developing fibromyalgia was worth it, because I don’t buy into that “think positive” prescription. But what I aim for is a quote I read somewhere along the way:

“it might not be the life you planned, but it’s a good life nonetheless”.

  • Breast Implant and Fibromyalgia

    Breast Implant and Fibromyalgia

A number of years ago I had a female patient that doubled as a famous female singer. Her resemblance to the singer was remarkable. After performances, this patient double would be ushered through the crowd to a limo that the followers and photographers would converge on. While this was happening the star singer was going out a side door with no crowd. It was great theatrics. When she was in town and available I would see her for her own chiropractic needs. After some years this double decided to have a breast enhancement. She actually came in and asked my opinion on the size she was considering.  I told her in my professional opinion that she looked just fine and that anything that a person adds to the body may very well cause an immune response.

Click Here to Visit the Store and find Much More….

Bottom line is that my patient did have the enhancement. The enhancement was quite large for her size. Within a month the patient became quite ill and had numerous physical reactions that eventually turned into Fibromyalgia. She was in constant body pain. She finally decided to have the implants removed but it was too late. Her body was racked with Fibromyalgia disease. Her anger actually turned toward me for not talking her out of doing the implants. I don’t know what she did with the doctor that actually did the surgery.

The reason why I bring this breast enhancement decision up is that within the past two weeks there was a television program on how many women were suffering various reactions from these surgeries. Of course, the surgeons and the AMA supported the idea of breast implants as safe, and the idea that this procedure would cause health problems was as believable as the condition of Fibromyalgia. ( That last part was obviously my own idea of how allopaths think if it affects some recognized procedure they are making a lot of money from.)

Fact: When a foreign body is added to your body your immune system will react. Sometimes there is a minimal negative reaction.  The body says “we can deal with that”. Sometimes especially if your immune system is already compromised your body will attack itself and cause a medical problem. This problem might be Fibromyalgia if you already have a genetic factor that triggers this condition. Just a reminder that Fibromyalgia is triggered by some physical, emotional, or chemical trauma or multiples of these. I think surgery and implanting objects in your body are considered a trauma. If you have already had this procedure and you have had no negative physical reaction then you are fortunate and your body has accepted your surgery. If, however, you are considering this procedure be aware of possible physical complications. One of the worse is Fibromyalgia.

  • FIBROMYALGIA for the Rich Poor and Everyone

Talk about “coming out”.  Lady Gaga announced she had to enter a hospital and cancel a number of future engagements due to severe body pain and fatigue that has been diagnosed as Fibromyalgia. She was very positive but she had no time schedule as to when she might be able to return to a regular schedule of work. If you have Fibromyalgia or know of someone who has this disease you know that this debilitating condition can literally change your life’s ability to function in a normal fashion.

Hopefully, Lady Gaga will not be just drugged up to be able to perform. I’ve already had some patients and marketing individuals try to send her information on my almost 30 years of working with Fibromyalgia patients. This just goes to prove that whoever you are if you are genetically tagged for Fibromyalgia it can be triggered by any physical, emotional, or chemical stress. As a high intense performer, I’m sure Lady Gaga has had many stressful moments. Regardless of an individual’s position, we should all be praying for Lady Gaga’s health.

A number of years ago an individual in the entertainment business told me that he knew of a number of performers that had Fibromyalgia but were afraid to “come out” because even years ago this condition meant that their ability to work, be on time, remember their lines or just be functional was compromised by their Fibromyalgia condition. If you are a performer and you are causing production to lag due to your illness that’s causing a money loss for the investors you might be labeled as not reliable. That could mean the end of your career. For many of you who are suffering from Fibromyalgia, it has already meant the loss of your job, spouse, and a normally functioning life that you once knew.

In almost 30 years working with Fibromyalgia patients, I have had almost every manner of individual including rich, poor, famous, females, males, and children and the common thread is the loss of the life they once knew. Do not give up hope. We have successfully helped those who have followed our protocol. Getting back to the life you once knew is what we help you achieve.

  • Fibromyalgia is a condition that is Not Worldly Known or Understood

Obviously, I cannot answer for all of the people of the countries in the world, however, those people that I interviewed for the most part either never heard of fibromyalgia or had very little knowledge of this condition. In my opinion, the people that I interviewed were well educated. Some had heard the term fibromyalgia but had little knowledge of this condition except for some similarity to flu-like symptoms. Any of the other many symptoms related to fibromyalgia such as headaches, fatigue, intestinal problems, hair loss, etc., were not considered or mentioned in the discussion.

For example, a lengthy meeting with a group from Brazil found my discussion both interesting and fascinating but apparently had fibromyalgia confused with diabetes and cholesterol conditions. It was interesting that one male individual from the group had no problem remembering his medication, Crestor, for his cholesterol problem but refused to consider any dietary changes including heavy levels of butter and bread along with excessive smoking. When I mentioned fibromyalgia I was met by stares, shrugs, and questions. Languages caused minimal problems since most people I met were conversant in the English language.

There were three groups of people that not only were knowledgeable about the condition of fibromyalgia but also had either family or friends that had been diagnosed with it. These individuals were from the countries of England, Scotland, and Denmark. These individuals were also knowledgeable because their medical community has apparently accepted fibromyalgia as a medical condition. However, treatments suggested in these countries follow the allopathic pharmaceutical forms of treatment.

Apparently, fibromyalgia is not known or understood internationally by the general public. I also question whether or not this is also true in the U.S. This lack of knowledge and acceptance only adds to the problem of understanding the many symptoms that surround a fibromyalgia patient and the proper treatment required.
